Bridging equity gaps through community-led initiatives
Lilaani Thangavadivelu is a passionate health equity advocate and a current Master of Public Health student in Epidemiology at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. As a bilingual workshop facilitator with Free Periods Canada, she leads engaging and inclusive menstrual equity workshops across Canada, helping to bridge the knowledge gap surrounding menstrual health. Her work is grounded in the belief that access to knowledge is a right—not a privilege. Beyond menstrual health, Lilaani is deeply committed to addressing systemic barriers in underserved communities. She organizes free scholarship education sessions for low-income families, expanding access to academic and career opportunities. In the public health sphere, she has spearheaded and supported health initiatives and research rooted in the principle of “Nothing about us, without us,” ensuring that community voices shape the health programs designed to serve them. Her work centers the social and environmental determinants of health and champions community co-designed research as a pathway to more equitable, accessible, and culturally responsive preventive care. Whether in classrooms, communities, or conferences, Lilaani brings deep care, critical insight, and an unwavering commitment to ensuring no one is left behind. Behind the scenes, Lilaani enjoys traveling and performing Carnatic music.
